design to make a trench coat out of duck tape

Today I'm excited to share my first ever co-post with Shannon from Gamine & Stripes.  Not only is she a great fashion blogger but I've known her for years and just found out a few months ago that she has a fashion blog!  Today on her blog she's showing how to style one of my most popular necklaces so don't miss her post!  My post today was inspired by one of Shannon's latest, "3 Spring Jackets Every Stylish Woman Owns".  When I read it I realized that I didn't have any of those.  Which doesn't really surprise me… I don't really consider myself a "stylish woman".  But the day I read it was my thrift store day so I thought I'd take a look and see what I could find.  Guess what?  I found all three at thrift stores!

First, I'll show you the three jackets.  Then I'll give you a few tips on shopping for jackets at thrift stores.

3 Spring Jackets, Thrift Store Style

The first jacket is the trench coat.  I haven't owned a trench coat since the one my grandmother bought me when we moved to Illinois about 20 years ago!

I found two on my shopping trip today.  This one fit perfectly.  It's Esprit and cost $10.99 at Goodwill.

Next is the navy blazer.  This was the easiest to find.  They all looked the same to me until I tried them on.  Make sure you read Shannon's blog to get her fitting hints.

Here's the one I bought.  I'll probably wear it with jeans like she showed on her blog.  This also cost $10.99 from Goodwill.

Next is the utility jacket.  This one's my favorite so far.  Maybe because it's already getting warm or maybe it just fits my more casual style.  It's perfect for the flea markets.  This was a bargain, only $7.99 at Goodwill.

And here are my tips for buying clothes at thrift stores:

  • Try on a lot of clothes.  Even if they're not your size.  You may be surprised at the fit.  You can also have them altered or you may be able to do some small alterations yourself.
  • Thoroughly check the item for stains, tears, and ripped seams.
  • Check zippers, cords, and buttons.
  • Be patient.  Don't expect to find exactly what you're looking for every time.  It was extremely unusual for me to find all three of these jackets in one day… but I also went to 6 thrift stores that day!
  • Don't buy something just because it's cheap.  Make sure you REALLY like it and it fits.
  • Wash or clean before wearing.
  • Learn some basic sewing skills.  Start with sewing on buttons and hemming. When I washed the trench coat three of the buttons came off.  Luckily, I found them in the washer and just sewed them back on.
  • Sometimes you'll find items that are already missing a button.  The easiest thing to do is just remove all the buttons and buy new, matching ones.
